Revive Downtown Richlands

Revive Downtown Richlands (RDR) was founded by a passionate group of Richlands residents and business owners in 2012 as the Main Street Committee.  Through community outreach and fundraising, the group made steady progress beautifying and preserving the historic downtown district.  The Main Street Committee evolved into Revive Downtown Richlands in 2014 with the organization’s incorporation and approval of 501c3 non-profit status.  Partnering with Main Street America, RDR sought to revitalize the downtown historic district by implementing The Main Street Center Four Point Approach.

In June 2022, the Richlands Board of Aldermen unanimously voted to become inactive in the Main Street America program and instead receive guidance and support for downtown revitalization efforts from the Rural Planning Center within the NC Department of Commerce. Engaging with preservation-based economic development tools helps to provide a foundational method for local efforts to revitalize downtown historic and commercial districts.

Throughout historic downtown, locally made barn quilts help to add color and character to the streets.  The pieces were created through a generous donation of time from our talented elementary art department.

Commissioned in 2014 from Stephen Z Metal Designs, the Wishing Tree is displayed in Venter’s Park as an interactive piece of art for the town’s residents to enjoy.   Pencils and biodegradable ribbons are located in a box nearby so that wishes can be tied to the branches.  Wish ribbons will adorn the tree until they blows away with the wind or fall to the earth where they will decompose with nature.
